CHAPTER ELEVEN

Callum

I tried. I really did.

I haven’t turned my gaze from Wes and Adele throughout the entire lunch, focusing on them instead of on the temptation to their left.

I listed a million reasons why going after Robin was the worst fucking idea of my life.

And this right here is why I hate myself more. Sitting here in their company, I know I don’t need a million reasons.

I don’t need so much as two.

I need one, and one alone—she’s my best friend’s daughter.

There’s no precedence to this. None of our friends or acquaintances had anything remotely similar happening to them. This should be an easy choice. Wes is fine, or will be very soon. I’ll move back to Los Angeles, leave the girl alone, and find someone my own goddamn age.

Case open, case shut.

Only it isn’t. Even I don’t believe the bullshit I’m feeding myself.

With Robin nearby, so close I can reach out and touch her, I realize I can’t walk away. Her adorable little smile, the hint of her sass she gives her sister, and fuck, the outline of her breasts as well—I can’t imagine a life without it.

Can’t hold on to the promise I haven’t spoken but am bound to anyway: Thou shalt not fall for thy best friend’s daughter.

Or think about coming inside her every hour of every fucking day.

“I can handle a few plates,” Robin says to the floor, denying my help.

Denying her at the party might have hurt her. It’s either that, or she’s embarrassed by me showing up here. Possibly both.

And I know just how to make it right.

“You don’t have to, though.” I trail behind her into the kitchen, closing the door behind me and barricading us inside.

The light switch is automated, bathing the kitchen in a warm glow. It gives Robin’s hair a golden hue, softening her already delicate features.

“I can help you with other things, Robin.” My voice drops an octave as I lean into the counter. “Can help the both of us.”

She shivers, the plates nearly tumbling out of her hands to the floor. I wipe out the distance between her and me in two long strides.

I’m next to her, gripping her hand and looking into her eyes.

“Don’t.” She holds my gaze in hers. “I need a minute. I need to wash these dishes.”

“Need a hand?”

“Need to think.”

She’s so expressive, her emotions spill out of her in waves. I recognize them because they’re identical to mine. To be a decent and honorable person for Wes’s sake versus adhering to the inner voice that tells me this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

To not let her slip through my fingers.

“Callum.” She sighs. “My thoughts scare me.”

“Wash the dishes then, please.” I take a step back, gesturing at the water. “The sound of the water will soothe you.”

Her cute nose wrinkles, and she goes at it.

I’m quiet while I observe her surrendering herself to the calm the simple action gives her. She’s beautiful.

No. She isn’t. Calling her beautiful is an insult to what she really is.
